Historical lead-up

In the opening chapter of the Gospel of John, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in biblical history. The author, John, is introducing us to the profound truth of Jesus Christ’s identity. Prior to this verse, John speaks about the Word, which refers to Jesus, being present at the beginning of creation. This sets the stage for understanding the significance of Jesus coming into the world as a human being.

Why this verse was written

This verse was written to reveal the nature of Jesus Christ to both believers and seekers. John aims to clarify that Jesus is not just a prophet or a teacher, but the very embodiment of God’s Word. His audience, primarily composed of early Christians and those curious about the faith, needed to grasp the depth of who Jesus is—fully divine and fully human. This understanding is crucial for recognizing the grace and truth that Jesus brings into our lives.

True meaning

In this verse, “the Word was made flesh” signifies that Jesus took on human form, entering our world to live among us. The phrase “dwelt among us” emphasizes His intimate presence and connection with humanity. When John mentions “we beheld his glory,” he refers to the divine nature of Jesus that was revealed through His life and actions. The description of Jesus as “full of grace and truth” highlights His character—He embodies both the unmerited favor of God and the ultimate reality of God’s truth. This verse encapsulates the miracle of the Incarnation, where God becomes accessible to us through Jesus.
