The Context — The History
James wrote to scattered Jewish Christians facing social conflict and worldly influence. Spiritual warfare, repentance, and divided loyalty were real threats in communities pulled between Christ and surrounding culture.

James 4 warns against friendship with the world and quarrels born of selfish desires. He calls for submission to God, resistance to the devil, and wholehearted drawing near through repentance and purified hearts.
