The Context — The History
Jesus concluded a section of the Sermon on the Mount addressing how His followers relate to others and to the Law. First-century Judaism debated how Torah applied in daily relationships under Roman rule.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Jesus had taught about prayer, fasting, treasures in heaven, and not worrying. He then summarized ethical life: treat others as you would want to be treated — the heart of the Law and the Prophets.
