The Context — The History
Psalm 143 is a morning prayer from David pursued by enemies, one of the penitential psalms. Ancient believers often began day seeking confirmation of God's steadfast love and guidance, entrusting life direction to the Lord before circumstances could overwhelm.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
David pleads for mercy, remembering God's faithfulness and asking not to be judged by foes. His spirit grows faint within him. At dawn he asks for word of unfailing love because he trusts God, and requests clear direction because his life is entrusted to him.
