The Context — The History
Psalm 42 expresses deep longing for God's presence, likely during exile from temple worship. Korah's sons voiced what many faithful Israelites felt when enemies mocked and circumstances pressed down the soul, yet hope could be preached to one's own heart.

The psalmist thirsts for God like a deer for water and recalls past worship with tears. Taunted by foes, his soul is downcast. Twice he speaks to himself: why are you disturbed? Put hope in God, for I will yet praise my Savior and my God.
