The Context — The History
A scribe asked Jesus which commandment is first during Passover week in Jerusalem. Jewish teachers debated ranking the 613 commandments; Jesus answered by quoting the Shema from Deuteronomy 6.

After parables and controversies with leaders, a teacher of the law asked sincerely about priority. Jesus declared wholehearted love for God supreme, adding mind to the traditional heart, soul, and strength.
