The Context — The History
Jesus spoke in Galilee to crowds who expected a political Messiah. Roman crucifixion was a brutal public execution reserved for rebels and criminals, making His language shocking and unmistakably serious.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Jesus had just foretold His suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter rebuked Him, and Jesus turned to the crowd to clarify that following Him means daily self-denial, not worldly gain or comfort.
