The Context — The History
Jesus spoke in the upper room on the night before His crucifixion, preparing disciples for persecution and scattering. Roman power and religious hostility would soon crush Him outwardly, yet He spoke of victory already achieved.

John 16 records Jesus' farewell discourse about sorrow turning to joy and prayer in His name. He warns of trouble ahead but promises peace in Him because He has overcome the world's opposition to God's kingdom.
