The Context — The History
A Pharisee who was an expert in the law tested Jesus in Jerusalem during His final week. Jewish teachers had identified 613 commandments and debated which was greatest — Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy and Leviticus.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After silencing Sadducees and Pharisees with questions about resurrection and the Messiah, Jesus is asked which commandment is greatest. He summarizes the law in two inseparable loves — for God and for neighbor.
