The Context — The History
At Mount Sinai, Israel met God as a nation recently freed from Egypt. Covenant language echoed ancient treaties, but here the great King chose a people for himself. Obedience was not earning salvation from slavery; it was the response of a redeemed community.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Israel camped before the mountain while thunder, smoke, and trumpet sound signaled God's presence. Moses relayed God's offer: if they obeyed and kept covenant, they would be God's treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation among all peoples.
