The Context — The History
Romans 12 begins the ethical section rooted in God's mercies in chapters 1–11. In a culture of temple sacrifice, Paul calls for whole-life worship — bodies presented daily to God.

After eleven chapters of doctrine, Paul turns to response: do not conform to the age but be transformed. Presenting bodies as living sacrifices is logical worship in light of mercy received.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
