The Context — The History
Psalm 121 is a song of ascents for pilgrims traveling uphill toward Jerusalem. Mountains could symbolize threat from bandits or false shrines on high places, as well as majestic stability.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
The psalm opens with a rhetorical question as the traveler looks to the hills. The answer follows: help comes from the LORD, maker of heaven and earth, who watches without sleeping.
