The Context — The History
Hebrews was written to Christians facing persecution and fatigue, tempted to abandon their faith. The ‘cloud of witnesses’ evokes a stadium where heroes of chapter 11 cheer on those still running the race of faith.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Chapter 11 recounts Abel, Abraham, Moses, and others who lived by faith without receiving the promise. The author now urges readers to shed hindrances and run with endurance, eyes fixed on Jesus who finished His race first.
