The Context — The History
Jesus spoke in the upper room on the night He was betrayed, hours before the cross. In the ancient world, groups were identified by philosophies or rituals — Jesus said love would mark His followers unmistakably.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
After predicting Judas's betrayal and Peter's denial, Jesus gives a farewell command. He had just washed the disciples' feet as a model of servant love, and now elevates mutual love as the defining sign of discipleship.
