The Context — The History
Psalm 116 is a thanksgiving psalm from someone spared from death, possibly after illness or danger. In temple worship, such personal testimony expressed love for God rooted in experienced mercy rather than abstract religious duty.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
The psalmist recalls anguish and sorrow when death seemed near. He called on the Lord's name and was delivered. His response is love for the God who heard his voice, followed by vows to walk before the Lord in the land of the living.
