The Context — The History
Psalm 16 is a trust psalm attributed to David, expressing confidence in God's counsel and inheritance. In Israel's worship, joy in God's presence was not escapism but the fruit of clinging to the Lord as one's highest good and secure refuge.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
David declares the Lord is his portion and cup, his pleasant inheritance. He will not follow other gods. Because the Lord shows the path of life, David anticipates fullness of joy in God's presence and pleasures forever at his right hand.
