The Context — The History
Abram lived as a nomadic patriarch in Canaan, decades after leaving Ur. At ninety-nine, human hope of offspring seemed impossible. God appeared again to renew covenant promises using the name God Almighty, calling Abram into wholehearted obedience.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Years earlier God called Abram and promised land and descendants. Ishmael had been born through Hagar, yet the promised child was still unborn. In chapter 17 God renames Abram to Abraham and announces that Sarah will bear Isaac, demanding faithful walking before him.
