The Context — The History
David ruled from Jerusalem after uniting Israel and bringing the ark. Nathan the prophet spoke in a time when neighboring kings built dynasties, but Israel's king was under God's covenant rather than mere hereditary luck.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
David wanted to build God a temple, but God promised instead to build David a house—a lasting dynasty. The promise points toward Solomon and ultimately to the Messiah who would reign forever.
