The Context — The History
Israel needed a renewed picture of God after breaking the covenant at Sinai. Ancient treaties often described a king's character; here the true King defines himself by compassion, patience, and steadfast love.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
God hid Moses in the cleft of the rock and passed by, proclaiming his name and nature. This self-description becomes one of the most quoted summaries of God's character in the Old Testament.
