The Context — The History
Paul wrote to Ephesian believers from diverse backgrounds — Jews, Gentiles, slaves, and free — who needed new patterns for community life. Forgiveness was countercultural in a honor-shame society where grudges often defined relationships.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Ephesians 4 calls believers to put off the old self and put on the new self created in God's likeness. Paul lists virtues of the new life and grounds forgiveness in the massive debt Christ cancelled on our behalf.
