The Context — The History
Jonah was a prophet sent to Nineveh, capital of Assyria — Israel's feared enemy. His story, set in the 8th century BC, explores God's mercy toward nations Israel despised.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Jonah fled by ship toward Tarshish rather than preach in Nineveh. God sent a violent storm, and sailors threw Jonah overboard at his request. Then the Lord provided a great fish to swallow him for three days and nights.
