The Context — The History
Daniel and other Judean youths were taken to Babylon around 605 BC to serve in Nebuchadnezzar's court. They faced pressure to adopt Babylonian customs while remaining faithful to the God of Israel.

Chapter 1 introduces Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah as gifted young men chosen for royal service. The king assigned them food and wine from his table, setting up Daniel's courageous resolve.
