The Context — The History
Jacob was returning to Canaan after years with Laban, anxious about meeting Esau whose blessing he had taken. At the Jabbok River he wrestled through the night with a divine figure. Name changes in the ancient world marked transformed identity and new calling.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Jacob sent gifts ahead to Esau and moved his family across the river. Alone, he wrestled until daybreak, refusing to let go without a blessing. The encounter left him limping but renamed Israel, a patriarch whose struggle became the nation's identity.
