The Context — The History
On the day of resurrection, two disciples leave Jerusalem for Emmaus discouraged. Luke shows how risen Jesus interprets Moses and the Prophets to rekindle hope in a shattered community.

Jesus walks unrecognized with Cleopas and another disciple, explaining how Messiah had to suffer. At table he breaks bread, their eyes open, and they rush back to tell the eleven.
