The Context — The History
Genesis opens Israel's foundational story, likely compiled during the exile when God's people needed a renewed identity. Ancient Near Eastern creation accounts often depicted gods battling chaos, but Genesis presents one sovereign God speaking the world into being.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Before any human story unfolds, Moses (traditionally the author) establishes that the heavens and earth have a Creator. The chapter will move from formless darkness to an ordered cosmos, culminating in humanity bearing God's image on the sixth day.
